Believe me. That can get VERY boring.
Last Sunday, Charlie Brooker's new horror/comedy/satire crossover "Black Mirror" hit the screens of Channel 4. I was expecting quite a creation after recently discovering his amazing "Dead Set" production during my A Level Media lessons. Personally I really like my TV shows full of thought provoking story lines and ideas that think outside of the box, and this certainly didn't disappoint.
Meet Michael Callow. The Prime Minister of the UK. Someone who likes to have all his bases covered, and prepares for every evil he may face in his line of work. However, when faced with the kidnap of the much loved Princess Susannah of Beaumount, there is only one, perculiar demand in order to secure her release. One that involves the Prime Minister on a personal level. His decision will result in either life... or death.
The "gun-ho" attitude that people have when with their friendship groups is likely to be swayed towards the "majority thought". If 75% of people in a group believe something is wrong, then the likelihood of the other 25% (who personally believe it is right) being swayed into the "mob mentality" train of thought in order for an easy life is increased.
Strong thoughts on occasion may however make the individual stand for their initial thought. You've bound to be in that situation before. Do I say what "I" believe, or just nod and agree with the others? In "The National Anthem" we see the effects of this collective shifting of personal opinion in stark effect.
Are we facing a society where the internet is becoming our main source of power in our lives? Is it becoming too easy to follow the crowd, and just agree with people in a carefree manner of the consequences you may be inflicting apon a fellow human being? Rather than fighting your opinion if it defies the view of the majority? Some strong food for thought after watching this.
This is a deep and hard hitting show about human decisions and their repercussions. If you like "flowery" TV, then this is not for you. The moral issues it raises WILL make you think. However, if you like a satire/comedy crossover show that makes you think - this is bang on the money.
Well done Charlie. An excellently crafted piece of TV art. The majority of reviews so far from the press are very positive. I hope this continues with the next 2 episodes.
